Safety Education Access

We are working to make Hilton Head Island safer and more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.

Whether you are enjoying the island’s 134 miles of multi-use public and private pathways and our beautiful beach or cycling on the road, Bike Walk Hilton Head Island is advocating for your safety and access to bicycle and pedestrian facilities and for our community.

BICYCLE FRIENDLY

Hilton Head Island has been a League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly Community since 2011. In 2015 and again in 2019, our community was awarded the Gold level designation. We are one of six such communities in the state of South Carolina, and the only Gold community in the state. In the southern region we are one of two Gold communities, the other being Austin, TX. This year we are in the process of reapplying for our Bicycle Friendly Community designation.

Hilton Head Island has the honor of being a Gold level Bicycle Friendly Community.

programs

Our programs consist of bike safety education and the Bike Walk Ambassador Program.

The Bike Walk Ambassadors have been volunteering since 2013 to help make the pathways in Hilton Head Island more memorable and safe experience. Volunteers routinely patrol the pathways throughout the year and can be found at various community events.

There are various opportunities for your community or group to have a safety training session led by our own League Cycling Instructors.

We have also worked closely with the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island distributing safety vests and information through the Vulnerable Users Vest Program.

EVENTS

Throughout the year BWHHI teams up with the local organizations to support, plan and volunteer at events all over the island.

From leading community beach bike rides to volunteering with the Kiwanis to park bikes at the Heritage Golf Tournament, our committee members and friends are on the pathways and raising awareness for biking on the island.
