Bike Ambassador Program

MISSION

Volunteering since 2013 to help make the pathways on Hilton Head Island a more memorable and safe experience.

THE PROGRAM

Created by the Bicycle Advisory Committee in 2013, this program enhances the island’s designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community. Equipped with yellow vests or t-shirts to identify them, Ambassadors patrol two general routes on the Island’s multi-use pathways, two routes in Sea Pines and one route in Palmetto Dunes. Our volunteers provide directions, maps, safety tips and limited first aid and mechanical assistance for any cyclist in need. They carry maps, safety flyers, first aid kits, and a list of bicycle shops with key phone numbers.

WHEn WILL I SEE A BIKE AMBASSADOR?

The Ambassador Program runs every year from Memorial Day weekend to the first week in August. They ride on Sundays and Mondays during two 2-hour shifts from 9am to 11am and from 11am to 1pm. Some stay stationary for their shift at on of the many pathway information kiosks on the Island. Other “free-lance” Ambassadors choose routes and times of their own to ride year-round.

HOW CAN I BECOME A BIKE AMBASSADOR?

All volunteers must complete a two-hour safety training and instructional course prior to participating. There are two training sessions scheduled this May for new Bike Ambassadors. Check our Events page for details.

Safety Training and Education

The Program

Members of the Bicycle Advisory Committee who have received the League Cycling Instructor certification offer opportunities for your community, HOA or organization to host a Smart Cycling class. Our Instructors are certified by the League of American Bicyclists to teach these classes to children as well as adults. This is the only nationwide bicycling instructor certification program.

What is Smart Cycling?

Smart Cycling is learning bicycling skills, safety and building the confidence to ride. This means feeling more secure about getting on a bike, having a mindset that bikes are treated as a vehicle, and learning how to ride safely and legally. Visit the League of American Bicyclists website to learn more.

vulnerable users vest program

purpose

Bike Walk Hilton Head Island has worked in collaboration with and support from the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island to distribute safety vests and biking safety information to locals who commute to work. To date, over 250 vest safety kits have been distributed thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club. Vest kits were distributed at the Sheriff’s Office and the Lowcountry Coalition. The SERG Restaurant Group also distributed vest kits to many of their employees. This program is currently inactive.
